FDA: Black licorice could affect potassium levels

October 24, 2012 (CHICAGO)

Black licorice contains a sweetener that could reduce potassium levels, and that can cause abnormal heart rhythms, high blood pressure and congestive heart failure.

The FDA says potassium levels should return to normal when you stop eating the candy.

People on regular medications or dietary supplements should consult their doctor before eating black licorice.
