Police shoot man with hammer after stabbing

One man is dead after a being shot by police in front of a liquor store on South Shore.

On Wednesday at 11:45 p.m., district police officers responded to a disturbance outside the South Shore Food and Liquor store at 79th and South Shore Drive. Police say they found one man stabbing another man. They say they told the suspect to drop the knife, and when he didn't, they Tased him. Then they say the suspect attacked police with a hammer, so they fired at him. The suspect died.

The police gunfire actually accidentally grazed one of their own officers, and she was treated and released from the hospital for a graze wound to the leg.

"The offender turns and starts walking towards one of the officers, and knife in one hand, and pulls a hammer out of his pocket and starts to go after the officer. The officer tried to Tase him. The Taser didn't have any effect on him. He keeps coming at him with the hammer. At that point, the officers opened fire," said Pat Camden, Fraternal Order of Police.

As for the victim who was being stabbed outside of the store, he was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He is listed in serious condition.
