Study: 1 drink during pregnancy could risk child's IQ potential

November 16, 2012

A new study suggests women who were moderate drinkers had children whose IQ was at least two points lower than women who didn't drink.

The research finds that four genetic variants in alcohol metabolizing genes in children and their mothers were strongly related to lower IQ at age 8.

Experts writing in the journal PLoS ONE say the effect is small but still reinforces the need to avoid alcohol in pregnancy.
