South Shore woman charged after newborn kidnapped, found in gangway

November 17, 2012 (CHICAGO)

Police were called to a home in the 1600-block of East 74th Street Tuesday morning to investigate a missing child.

According to investigators, 18-year-old T'Keyah Williams spent the night at the home and took the child while the family was sleeping. ABC7 is told Williams is a friend of the baby's aunt.

Chicago police found the baby about four hours later in the 6800-block of South Ridgeland.

Officer Naomi Gibson described her reaction when she saw the child.

"I was elated. Just, I was excited," she said. "She was wiggling and it was like she was mine. I got her. And I said, 'I got her. I'm going to the hospital.'"

Williams is charged with aggravated kidnapping and endangering the life and health of a child.

Police say she took the baby because her boyfriend had been arrested and she thought having a child might prompt the courts to be more lenient with him.
