Black Friday shoppers who purchase items at small businesses in Chatham on the city's South Side of Chicago might get a gift card.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chatham Business Association announced the 'Black Friday Plus' program on Tuesday. Customers who spend $100 at designated Chatham-Cottage Grove businesses will get gift certificates for stores including Nike, Walgreens, and Target.

"Buy local. Buy with your small businesses. And that's how we're going to strengthen our city. Resident to resident, small business to small business," Mayor Emanuel said.

The director of the group says for every $100 spent at a locally-owned store, $45 of it remains in the local economy.
