Beer belly might increase osteoporosis risk in men

November 28, 2012 (CHICAGO)

Bone loss is usually considered a health issue affecting women. But researchers found that visceral fat located deep under the muscles in the abdomen seems to be linked to bone loss and decreased bone strength in men.

This type of deep belly fat is also associated with an increased risk for heart disease

While researchers found an association between higher levels of belly fat and decreased bone strength. they did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

The study was presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America.
