Plenty of people are stepping up to help in this holiday season of giving, and on Saturday, December 1, 2012, hundreds of deserving families in the Chicago area are experiencing that firsthand.

The Coast Guard cutter "Mackinaw" is docked at Navy Pier. It's serving as this year's "Christmas Ship," and it's loaded with 1,300 Christmas trees. Cdr. Michael Davanzo, Commanding Officer of the ship, joined us live during our ABC7 News Saturday Morning to explain how the trees were being distributed to families in need.

There are also free, public tours of the Mackinaw on Saturday, December 1, from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
