Study: More sleep increases pain tolerance

December 4, 2012

Researchers found getting more sleep improves daytime alertness and reduces pain sensitivity in healthy adults.

Scientists took mildly sleep deprived people and extended their sleep to 10 hours per night. The length of time they were able to keep their fingers on a heat source increased by 25 percent.

The study is in the December issue of Sleep and is said to be the first of its kind to show that extended sleep reduces pain sensitivity.
