Recalling 2 deadly plane crash anniversaries

December 8, 2012 (CHICAGO)

It was 40 years ago when United Airlines flight 533 crashed into a row of bungalow homes on West 70th Place. Forty-three of the 61 people on board died. Two on the ground were also killed.

The plane crashed as it made its approach for landing. Among the dead were Congressman George Collins and the wife of Watergate conspirator Howard Hunt. 18 people survived.

It was also seven years ago Sunday, in 2005, when a Southwest Airlines plane landed in a snowstorm and then crashed through a fence and into a car on 55th Street.

The accident killed a 6-year-old boy in the car.

Joshua Woods was from Leroy, Indiana.

A bed of crushable concrete has now been installed at the end of a runway to help stop an out of control plane.
