Seventeen high schools are taking part in the program and about 250 students are enrolled in it. They earn high school and college credit without leaving their classroom.
This spring, about 500 students are expected to enroll in classes thanks to the expansion.
"Part of the dual enrollment, dual credit program that we expanded, I pledged to do here in the campaign, is giving kids who may be the first one in their family, the exposure to college, taking the mystery out of that process as well as the education and showing them they're capable," Mayor Rahm Emanuel said.
Ninety-percent of the public school students currently enrolled in the dual credit program have earned college credit by passing with a grade of C or better.
