Police use surveillance video to search for brazen Lincoln Park burglars

December 10, 2012 (CHICAGO)

A fence, a deadbolt, a second lock and even an activated alarm system didn't stop the burglars from entering the home as the family slept upstairs, according to authorities.

"Even when you think you're protected, you're not. If they want to get in, they'll get in," said Sara Latham. "It was scary but instinctively I was just mad. I wanted them out of my house."

Surveillance video captured a group of four men walking down the alley. One appeared to be checking for open gates, and a few moments later, the group is seen in front of the home.

During the robbery, Latham said her instincts led her to scream that she had a gun.

The threat worked, prompting the men to leave. Surveillance video shows the group sprinting away.

"It's infuriating. It's scary. You feel violated that you had someone in your house," said Latham.

On Monday, the family asked residents to be vigilant.

"The odds of them getting caught are probably pretty slim, especially with what they're going on, grainy video, but hopefully this gets the word out," said Swayne Latham.
