Report: Muscle strength predictor of death risk

December 13, 2012

According to a new report, the ability to sit and then rise from the floor is a strong predictor of the risk of death in middle-aged and elderly people.

For the test, a person sits on the floor and then tries to get up using the minimum amount of support, such as a hand or knee.

Participants were ranked from 0-10. Those who scored 10 used the least amount of support.

People who scored below eight were twice as likely to die.

There's more on the test in the European Journal of Cardiovascular Prevention.
