The Baron family has only lived in the area for a few months. To them Newtown, Connecticut is still home.
Monday night, they chose to remember their friends in hopes of shining a light on those who continue to be affected by the tragedy.
Twenty-six candles light the way to the Baron family's front door. Each one has a name- the names of the 20 children and six adults killed in Newtown's Sandy Hook Elementary.
For the Baron family, the names are not an abstract. They represent people and families they knew, many of them closely.
"Our heart is unmistakably with the village of Newtown and the people of Sandy Hook," Keith Baron said.
The Baron family relocated from Newtown to suburban Woodridge in August. The children were students at Sandy Hook, and Barbara Baron worked there.
The idea for the luminaries was born in Connecticut. Monday night thousands of white candles lined the streets, and the Baron family decided to reciprocate the gesture in Woodridge.
"To shine a light on this beautiful season and light a candle and think about those who are celebrating Christmas in a way they never could have imagined," said Barbara Baron.
Dozens of neighbors joined in and lit candles up and down the Woodridge subdivision.
"It also struck people that it could have been here. If could have been our children. It was a very easy thing for people to do," said neighbor David Dornbos.
"Sandy Hook is our kids' only hometown to this point. This solidarity here and coming together just helps myself and the kids and Keith feel like this is home too," Barbara Baron said.
The Baron's said they hope the community's gesture will translate into actual monetary help for those living with the aftermath of the shooting.
