Armed robberies at suburban salons could be connected

January 4, 2012 (SKOKIE, Ill.)

One of the robberies was caught on surveillance video with the suspect seen pulling a gun from his backpack.

At least eight hair salons have been targeted by one man. Police are now asking for the public's help in finding him before he robs again.

The suspect is shown as he enters the Hair Cuttery on Skokie Boulevard in Skokie Thursday. He pretends to buy an item, takes out a long barrel revolver, and then points a gun at the employee, demands cash and takes off. It was a scary moment for workers.

"We are taking every measure to make sure that the safety of our stylists and our clients are the highest priority," said Leslie Ambrose.

The Skokie salon is the eighth location he's targeted since last Thursday. He robbed the Hair Cuttery in Lombard, a tobacco shop in Bensenville, salons in Niles, Chicago, and a Great Clips in Glen Ellyn was hit Thursday morning.

"A guy came in, he was wearing glasses and a scarf over his face and then he said that this was a robbery and he threw a bag at one of the girls in front of the cash register and then pointed a gun at them," said Great Clips manager Julinda Rexha.

There were two stylists inside the salon at the time. No one was hurt and since the salon just opened, the suspect only got away with $150.

But Rexha already learned a lesson, and made changes.

"We started with yesterday, there's three of us closing now and there's three of us opening just in case anything ever happens," Rexha said.

Thankfully many different cameras at various salon locations captured him from many angles and workers were able to provide a good description.

"There is surveillance tape from multiple locations and there's a fairly decent description from all the eye witnesses in all the incidents, so we're confident that somebody's going to pick up on who this guy is and we'll figure it out," said William Holmer, Glen Ellyn Police Deputy Chief.

In all of the cases, the suspect has chosen a hair salon in a strip mall. Authorities believe that he has targeted more salons between Thursday night and Friday.
