Strawberries, blueberries cut heart disease risk for women by a third, study says

Berries could pack a bigger punch for women in the fight against heart disease.

A new study by the American Heart Association shows that women who eat strawberries and blueberries at least three times a week have a 32-percent lower chance of a heart attack than average.

Researchers suggest that a group of dietary flavenoids called anthocyanins, which give blueberries and strawberries their color, may help dilate arteries and counter the buildup of plaque.
