Chicago police officers did not comment on their ongoing investigation, and Chicago Fire Department officials have yet to determine to what caused the fire.

Firefighters were called to the scene just after 9 a.m. Friday after neighbors and passersby saw smoke and flames coming from the second-floor of the two-story home.

"I was driving down the street, and I saw a whole lot of smoke coming out of the building, so I told my daughter to hurry up and call the police, hurry up and call the fire department," Maria Daniels said.

"Engine 116 discovered occupant in the kitchen and a second occupant in the kitchen. Both were transported by ambulance to local hospitals," Chicago Fire Battalion Chief Terry Case said.

Chicago police remain on the scene. Investigators describe the home as disheveled, and are trying to determine if that was the case before or during the fire.
