Crews tear down Bridgeport warehouse

January 25, 2013 (CHICAGO)

The first call about the fire came in Tuesday evening. Hundreds of firefighters and big equipment responded in the freezing cold. Officials believed it had been struck on Wednesday, but on Thursday morning, the fire flared up again. Once more, fire crews dumped gallons of water on the gutted warehouse.

Three walls and the roof of the building collapsed. Crews started the demolition Friday morning.

Ashland Avenue remains closed at 38th Street in the Bridgeport neighborhood.

The building is owned by developer Calvin Boender, who was found guilty of bribing Chicago Ald. Ike Carothers to get a zoning charge.
