Police say an armed teenager who was shot and wounded by police officers on the roof of a building in Brooklyn was firing blanks.

Police were responding to a report of gunfire from a rooftop on Atlantic Avenue just after 9:35 p.m. Monday went they encountered two suspects.

One of the suspects, 16-year-old Gino Mercado, of Brooklyn, was armed with a Ruger revolver, which subsequently turned out to be loaded with blanks.

He was shot in both arms and his right ankle and was listed in stable condition at Brookdale Hospital.

Both Mercado and his accomplice, 22-year-old James Caples, were arrested on charges of attempted assault on a police officer and criminal possession of a weapon. It wasn't clear if they had lawyers.

The weapon was recovered.
