Thomas Prendergast spoke to the City Council's Transportation Committee on Tuesday.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Prendergast said limited train service could return sooner than a full restoration of the station. He said the agency hoped to have a timeline for restoration in the next couple of months.
The station, at Manhattan's southern tip, was inundated with water up to its ceiling during Superstorm Sandy. The MTA estimates that fully restoring the station would take up to three years and cost $600 million.
Prendergast also said the agency is looking into ways to protect the infrastructure from future floods.
