According to the Chicago Tribune, Chris Connors bought the domain name back in 2010.
He told the paper he always admired Saint Francis and hoped one day the name would be chosen by a pope.
Connors contacted the Chicago archdiocese about his offer.
The Tribune says Francis Cardinal George called the offer delightful and passed it on to Vatican officials.
