But here's where the business is markedly different from the mugshots that have appeared for eons in newspapers and on TV: The relatively new companies will charge a fee -- as much as $300 in one case -- to remove the photos from their websites. And while area police departments decry the practice, they say they're bound by Freedom of Information laws to turn over the mug shots to the companies.
Lawyers, too, complain their clients have to pay the "blood money," even if they're ultimately cleared of the charges. Legal experts say the arrestees have few other options.
