Ruling upholds decision to reject Hammond gun suit

March 17, 2013 (HAMMOND, Ind.)

The appeals court ruling Friday sides with a Lake County judge's decision to reject the lawsuit because a 2011 state law had voided all local restrictions on guns.

However, an attorney representing the residents tells The Times of Munster he intends to request the Indiana Supreme Court take on the case. Guy Relford says Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott intentionally wants to leave the ordinances on the books so they influence people's behavior. He says the city should repeal the ordinances to avoid confusion.

The ordinances had restricted guns from city buildings or at any city board or commission meeting.
