Students, citizens gather to fight the violence

March 20, 2013 (CHICAGO)

Students, community members affected by violence and others gathered for "Creating Peace on the Streets of Chicago" Wednesday.

The auditorium was packed. The university organized the program in response to students who were moved by the outbreak of violence in Chicago. They hope to make a difference.

A song called "Never Again" was performed. It's meaningful because it was written in the aftermath of the murder of 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton.

Klyn Jones was with her close friend Hadiya at a South Side park after school in January.

She witnessed her friend being shot by a gunman who fired random shots at the group of students gathered. Jones spoke in the hope of finding a solution to the violence.

"It hurts," she said.

Shortly after the shooting, Jones had to call Hadiya's mother to break the news.

Hadiya's mother Cleo Pendleton also spoke and said that she has not accepted the fact her daughter was murdered and is still looking forward to Hadiya's 16th birthday.
