Meteorite might be first ever found from Mercury

March 31, 2013 (THE WOODLANDS, Texas) p> The green rock is one of a cluster of ancient meteorites discovered last year in Morocco. Meteorite scientist Anthony Irving says that the cluster, known as NWA 7325, is about 4.56 billion years old, according to SPACE.com.

Irving says the meteorites have a lower “magnetic intensity” than any other rock found yet, and has a magnetic signature similar to that of Mercury, the innermost planet in the Solar System.

A paper describing the space rock suggests that it could possibly hail from another “protoplanet” near Mercury as well.

Irving presented his findings this month at the 44th annual Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in The Woodlands, Texas.
