In southwest suburban Indian Head Park, a woman who lost her daughter to the suburb's first murder has won a seat on the village board.

Brenda O'Laughlin is one of three people to oust incumbent trustees. O'Laughlin's daughter Kelli, a 14-year-old student at Lyons Township High School, died in 2011 during a break-in at the family's home.

O'Laughlin and the two others who won seats on the village board vow to get a better handle on Indian Head Park's finances.

O'Laughlin and the two other candidates who won with her say they view serving as trustees as honor, so they will not accept the $3,000 part-time salary.
