Chicago sinkhole at least 20 feet deep

April 23, 2013 (CHICAGO)

The hole swallowed three cars and left a huge crater in the street at 96th and Houston.

City officials say there is a great deal of work to be done before the sinkhole can be completely repaired.

Water has been turned back on for residents immediately surrounding the hole, but workers are exploring and scoping the hole and sewer system to determine the extent of damage to all the systems involved. ComEd and Peoples Gas are rerouting their systems.

Private contractors have been hired to assist in the repair work. It has not yet been determined how long the project will take to complete.

The sinkhole caved in around 5:15 a.m. Thursday, swallowing three cars. One man also fell into the sinkhole, but he was rescued.

The vehicles were removed from the sinkhole in the Jeffery Manor neighborhood on Thursday afternoon.
