Breast cancer walk steps off in Chicago

May 12, 2013 (CHICAGO)

This year, the event honored Chicago's former first lady, the late Maggie Daley, for the first time. Mrs. Daley died from cancer in November 2011.

The former mayor, Richard M. Daley, his children, brothers and other relatives joined many teams completing the race Sunday.

The Daley family members were among thousands walking and racing at the event at Butler Field in Grant Park.

Money raised at the event funds breast health education, screenings and treatment. Approximately 75 percent of the proceeds are used locally, and the rest is spread globally.

Last year, $1.5 million was raised and used in 17 community organizations throughout Chicago.

Another breast cancer walk also took place Sunday in the South Side Beverly neighborhood.
