49 arrested during NAACP protest at Legislature

RALEIGH

Forty-nine people were arrested Monday outside the Senate chambers in protests targeting the Republican-held legislature.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and other activists say the agenda on social programs, voting rights, labor and other areas disproportionately hurts the poor and minorities.

What North Carolina chapter president the Rev. William Barber is now calling "Moral Mondays" will continue indefinitely. He says the demonstrations are part of a wider strategy that includes legal action and political organizing.

Those arrested face charges of violation of building rules, failure to disperse and trespassing.

Thirty people were arrested last Monday. A week before, 17 protesters were taken into custody.
