A little formula may help new moms breastfeed

May 13, 2013 (CHICAGO)

Early on, when new moms are having a difficult time nursing, using a small amount of formula may give moms the assurance they need to keep pursuing breastfeeding.

When moms develop concerns about their milk they tend to stop nursing. Instead of giving full bottles of formula, research in the journal "Pediatrics" suggests a small amount of supplementation with a clear end point.

Not surprisingly, many breast-feeding experts take issue with the finding and worry it may undermine public health messages that breast milk alone is best for babies.
