Frank Kozak and his wife Char survived that deadly disaster.
They just returned home to Schaumburg after visiting relatives. The home they were staying in was flattened, and the village trustee is battered and bruised but thankful to be alive.
"We're fortunate that we got out of it and thankful. I feel fortunate that we got out alive and I feel sorry for those who lost loved ones," said Kozak.
His wife has already undergone surgery for severe injuries to her hand and she will have to endure more surgeries later. But Kozak say it's the emotional damage that isn't visible that will take the longest to heal.
But Kozak did say in all the rubble he found his wife's wedding band.
