Summer jobs difficult to find for Chicago area teens

June 3, 2013 (NAPERVILLE, Ill.)

Tina Remec, 16, cracked her phone last week and mom said the repairs were on her.

School is out for many Naperville teens and summer jobs are hard to come by.

"I've been doing a lot of job applications but it seems nothing is coming through, so I just keep hoping something will fall through," said J.J. Vance.

"I applied for this job in November. I just got lucky, still looking right now," said Kayla McCabe.

Gina Sharp with Kids Matter in Naperville helped teens with mock interviews at a job fair in March.

She suggests teens look at their extracurriculars as experience.

Austin Hansen landed a paid internship. He appreciated interview prep from the job fair.

In Chicago, teens are being selected for the jobs with the One Summer Chicago Program. The commissioner of Family & Support Services urges teens and the parents to look for opportunities this summer.
