Buffalo Grove wants parents to relax during their kids' sports games

June 6, 2013 (BUFFALO GROVE, Ill.)

The Buffalo Grove Park District started hanging some new—and humorous—signs around its parks to remind parents that "it's just a game."

"This is a game being played by children," the signs read. "If they win or lose every game of the season, it will not impact what college they attend or their future income potential."

Park district Public Relations and Marketing Manager Mike Terson says the signs were his idea.

Terson used to be a public address announcer for the Cubs and the Chicago Wolves, so he was used to unruly fans. But seeing them in youth sports was something else entirely.

"I think kids are competitive enough," he said. "There's nowhere else where you can vent with obscenities. I think it's sad that it's trickled its way into youth sports."

The tongue-in-cheek signs have met with an overwhelmingly positive reaction in the community, so far.

"The only criticism is that they're not big enough," Terson said.
