Two gunshot victims were fighting for their lives, and two paramedics were counting their blessings after an ambulance got caught in the middle of a West Side shootout.

Just after 12 a.m. Saturday, the ambulance was heading westbound in the 3400-block of West Lake Street near the CTA Green Line train tracks and Garfield Park when paramedics noticed some people crouching down.

Chicago Fire Department officals say when the paramedics heard gunshots, they realized they were approaching crossfire. So, they ducked and called police.

The shooting left one person shot in the head and another in the chest. Both were taken to the hospital.

The paramedics who saw the shooting helped transport the injured
