Steroid injections could come with risks

A new study finds older adults who get this done may have increased odds of suffering a spine fracture.

Investigators say it's not clear whether the treatment is directly to blame but they say their finding should serve as a red flag. And older patients with low bone density should be cautious about using steroid injections.

It's known that steroids in general can cause bone density to decrease over time. Scientists reporting in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery say they're not saying people shouldn't get these injections but this is something that should be part of doctor-patient discussions.
