Questions to ask yourself:
1. What is the product's shelf life before it will begin to breed bacteria/fungus? If short, then save money
2. How important is the product in terms of enhancing your beauty? If important, then splurge.
Mascara (Depends)
Since mascara has a short shelf life, try to find a drugstore brand that you are more likely to throw out within the recommended 6 weeks to avoid bacterial/fungal infection. If you absolutely love the expensive mascara simply because of its applicator wand, you can always either use that wand (sanitized) or buy disposable wands that match that applicator shape and then use the disposable wands with the drugstore brand. finally, if you have to have that expensive mascara, use it as the final layer over the less expensive brand to get the most out of that expensive mascara.
Foundations/concealers: SPLURGE
Your face is your canvas. If you find a product that works well and you have to splurge, go for it. With the more expensive proucts, you will get better results with less.
Set powder: SAVE
If your foundation is color correct, all you need is one translucent set powder and they are all similar!
Multitaskers: DEPENDS
Try to find a product that multi-tasks-lip stain/cheek stain-then you can splurge or save, if you find something you love, at least it's doing two jobs.
Powders: SPLURGE
On highly pigmented powders for eye shadow, stick with mostly neutrals that you will always need. Try the drugstore if you want to experiment with a crazy color. If you like the color, then splurge on a more pigmented powder
Eye liner pencils/lip pencils: SAVE
Many inexpensive ones are equally as good as the more expensive pencils.
Gloss: SAVE
You can even just use Vaseline or rosebud salve either alone or over your favorite lip color and get a great result and you won't need expensive gloss.
Lipstick: DEPENDS
It has a short shelf life, but you have to love it, it's your choice to splurge or save. Either way, it has a short shelf life, so it you are flexible with brands, go to the drugstore.
