Immigration reform highlights conference talk

June 29, 2013 (CHICAGO)

Congressman Luis Gutierrez and Senator Dick Durbin spoke Saturday at the annual conference of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials.

Durbin was part of a bipartisan group that drafted legislation passed this week in the senate. Its prospects are uncertain in the house.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus also took part in THE discussion and says there's something else the GOP needs to do.

"I think most importantly for our party we need to engage," said Priebus. "We need to engage Latino communities across the country. That means on a year round basis not six months before a presidential election. But get in the communities with the leaders from the community and start talking about what the Republican Party's all about."

A 5K run and walk opened the final day of the conference. It's a way for the association to highlight it's commitment to health and wellness.
