Chicago a top July 4th destination

July 2, 2013 (CHICAGO)

Chicago bumped Las Vegas from the No. 10 spot this year.

Orlando, New York and Los Angeles are the top 3.

Officials at the Illinois Tollway say they expect more than 6.5 million vehicles to hit the northern Illinois highway system during the holiday period.

The Tollway says Wednesday will likely be the busiest day of the Wednesday-through-Sunday period. That's when about 1.6 million vehicles are expected to travel along the highway system, up about 14 percent from a typical day.

To ease congestion, the Tollway will suspend construction lane closures beginning at noon on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, AAA Chicago says about 2.3 million Illinois residents will travel at least 50 miles from home during the Independence Day holiday - mostly by car. That's down about 0.6 percent from last year.

The auto club says Illinois gas prices averaged $4.05 a gallon in June, up 34 cents from last year.
