Tony Rose, 23, lived in the northern suburbs for a couple years before his family moved to Arizona.
Rose spent his freshman and sophomore years at Zion-Benton Township High School. School officials paid tribute to Rose on Tuesday.
"We extend our deepest sympathy to his family and loved ones regarding this tragic loss. We're very proud to learn that Tony went on to choose such a noble career and that he died serving others," said Dr. Chris Clark, District 126 superintendent.
Therese Mooney is the mother of Rose's pregnant fiance, who grew up in Racine, Wisconsin.
"This was her soul mate, yeah," said Mooney.
Tiffany Hettrick is expecting Rose's first baby in the fall. Hettrick told her mother that she lost the love of her life.
