Wis. shelter helped by cat's 26 toes closing

July 24, 2013 (MILWAUKEE)

In 2011, the Milwaukee Animal Rescue Center started asking for $26 donations - or $1 for each of the cat's toes - for a new building after finding out their rent was doubling.

Normal cats have 18 toes, but Daniel the cat has two extra on each foot due to a genetic mutation.

Center owner Amy Rowell says they ended up raising about $120,000 and bought a Greenfield building, with Daniel as the mascot. But Rowell says fundraising has dried up and they are losing too much money in property maintenance and overhead.

She hopes to find homes for the remaining 28 animals by the end of July. Rowell is adopting Daniel.
