CPD Supt. Garry McCarthy calls for tougher gun, sentencing laws

July 29, 2013 (CHICAGO)

He cited four examples of people who were shot in recent days.

McCarthy says if the sentencing laws were stricter, those people would have been behind bars and not out on the streets where they were shot.

"Too many guns on the streets coming in, not enough sentencing at the back end, results in more gun violence. We can do a lot of things in between, but until such time as the criminal justice system as a whole supports reducing gun violence we're going to be stuck in the same place," said Supt. Garry McCarthy, Chicago Police Department.

According to McCarthy, there have been 80 fewer murders in Chicago compared to last year. He says the number of shootings is down by more than 400.
