Home invasion suspect charged in Brooklyn spree with rape

WILLIAMSBURG

Detectives apparently recovered items in his possession believed stolen during the first and second attacks. Edgar Marrero was found by detectives sleeping in a building near the attacks.

Marrero is charged with rape, attempted rape, burglary, robbery, forcible touching, and sexual abuse.

In the first attack, the suspect pushed his way into a third floor Berry Street apartment home at 7:50 p.m. Monday night.

According to investigators, he told the 27-year-old woman that he would kill her if she didn't give him money. He struck her in the head, knocking her unconscious, and then allegedly raped her.

Marrero made off with the victim's iPhone and laptop, police said.

The woman was taken to Woodhull Hospital .

Police believe the same man struck again around 10 p.m. when he rang the doorbell of an Engert Avenue apartment door in Greenpoint.

When the 40-year-old woman answered, police say he pushed his way in and stole her cell phone, but her husband chased the suspect away.

"He stuck it and he put it here," said Jonathan Gonzalez, home invasion victim.

Jonathan Gonzalez had his throat and his belly slashed, trying to save his wife from being viciously raped and brutally assaulted Monday night in their Greenpoint apartment.

Jenine Gonzalez says the suspect broke into their home and punched her in the face.

"When he threw me on the floor he picked up my dress. That's when I started to yell. I thought he was going to rape me," Jenine Gonzalez said.

"She grabbed the knife and she went to stab him. When he seen the knife he said, 'No, no, no, I'll leave. I told her, 'Stab him, stab him!'" Jonathan Gonzalez said.

Mr. and Mrs. Gonzalez just found out that they're not the only victims.

Each time he allegedly followed the women home, where he assaulted them and stole their property.

The Gonzalez' wonder what would have happened if they didn't fight back.

"I didn't think I was going to die, I thought I was going to get him. But I didn't know what he had. He could have had a gun. If he would have had a gun we would have been gone," Jenine Gonzalez said.

He is also believed to be behind an attack on Nassau Avenue in Greenpoint at 10:30 p.m. The 47 year old woman in that case told police a man followed her to her third-floor apartment. He opened the door, which was unlocked, and grabbed a laptop.

He was confronted by a friend in the apartment. A struggle ensued, and the friend swung a broom at the man as he fled.

Also, the Marrero is accused of attacking a fourth person. A 44-year-old woman who was chaining her bike at Norman Avenue and Kingsland Avenue. He allegedly touched her inappropriately. Police say he struck that woman with a bag filled with the stuff he stole in the first two attacks.

In all, there were four attacks in just over two hours with the last three coming in just over 30 minutes.

During an ensuing large scale search, police found the suspect sleeping in a nearby building. He was taken into custody.
