According to Chicago police, the pedestrian was trying to cross the street against the stop light when a 1988 Oldsmobile coupe struck him. The driver, Phillip Beverly, 34, told police he did not have time to stop. He was cited with failure to exercise due care with a pedestrian in the roadway.
The pedestrian was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in extremely critical condition with injuries to his head and torso.
The driver also was treated for minor injuries.
