A 7-year-old boy shot was Sunday night in the 4200 block of West 5th Avenue in Chicago.

The fire department says the boy has been taken to Mount Sinai Hospital with serious wounds.

Witnesses said the shots came from the grounds of the Sumner Math and Science Community Academy, and at least one of the shots struck a 7-year-old-boy who was on the porch across the street with other family members.

Police have been concentrating their search on the grounds of the Sumner Academy. ABC7 has learned the boy's injuries are serious but not necessarily life-threatening.

Witnesses said they heard several shots.

"I seen guys flee that way," said Lavelle Tubbs. "And as I was walking up, I heard the kids and everybody yelling on the porch, and that's how we knew a little boy was shot. I see that little boy every day. He's a good little kid. He's just out here playing with his brothers and sisters, cousins and other neighborhood kids."
