Students paint mural on Chatham neighborhood building

August 20, 2013 (CHICAGO)

Students who attend Simeon Career Academy and Kenwood Academy worked on the mural.

It's on display outside the Garrett popcorn shop in the 700 block of East 87th Street in the Chatham neighborhood.

A local artist coached the students.

"I appreciate leaving an artistic legacy for this community. I definitely hope to inspire all these students to go ahead and rejuvenate their community with their own point of view and their own soul," said artist Rahmaan "Statik" Barnes.

"Basically what this mural is to us is giving back to the community. Anything that you can do, you can get better at it, and when you get better at it, good things come from hard work," said Asanta Cunningham from Simeon Career Academy High School.

Their work depicts images of young people doing everyday things.
