Cook County Jail population at highest level in 6 years

August 20, 2013 (CHICAGO)

According to Sheriff Tom Dart, there are 10,182 inmates. That represents a 3.7 percent increase over the past 11 days.

Because of the overcrowding, the sheriff's office continues to use over 200 beds in downstate counties for a fee. Electronic monitoring is at its highest level in several years.

Dart says he expects overtime costs to jump dramatically.
