93.5 pct of CPS students attended 1st day of class

August 29, 2013 (CHICAGO)

New figures released overnight show that more than 93 percent of Chicago Public Schools students attended the first day of class on Monday.

This is the time in five years all CPS students started school on the same day and this year they started a week earlier than usual.

The school board met Wednesday and approved a new budget that calls for higher property taxes.

The budget also taps into nearly $700 million in reserves.

The property tax levy will be increased to the maximum amount allowed by law.

And the budget includes $112 million in spending cuts to help deal with a billion dollar budget gap.
