Would-be chefs at John O'Connell High School are not just making sandwiches, they are also being trained in the business side of the food industry.
Their teacher is well known San Francisco Chef Daniel Scherotter.
He sold his restaurant Palio d'Asti last year to head up the national culinary program.
"The whole idea is to work your way up learn how the ladder works because in the age of American Idol no one's aware there's a ladder and so here they learn how to start and learn all the steps long the way," Scherotter said.
John O'Connell is the only high school in San Francisco to offer the Culinary Arts and Restaurant Management program.
The two year program was developed by the National Restaurant Association.
Approximately 94,000 culinary students in 47 states are currently being trained.
