Girl, 2, fatally struck by car in Englewood

September 20, 2013 (CHICAGO)

The driver stopped, police said. The child was initially transported to Comer Children's Hospital in "extremely" critical condition and was later pronounced dead.

The girl was in a stroller being pushed by her grandmother when the car hit them at 6:24 a.m., police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.

She was pronounced dead shortly after 7 a.m. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office confirmed the death, but did not release the girl's identity.

The grandmother was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, police said. Her condition was "not serious, but she's emotionally distraught," Mirabelli said. The driver of the car was being questioned as detectives continued to investigate the cause of the crash, Mirabelli said.
