The company says it plans to hire more cashiers and add shorter express lanes.
Self-checkout lanes have been eliminated at Chicago Jewel stores at Ohio and State and at Harlem and Foster.
They are also gone at several suburban locations including Glen Ellyn, River Forest, Palatine and Libertyville.
More stores will be changed over the next year.
