Police chiefs want more preschool education

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart and eight suburban police chiefs gather outside the Cook County Jail to call on Congress to approve a national plan increasing access to preschool.

They say research shows early childhood education prevents violent crime.

The law enforcement leaders say it would reduce the number of people imprisoned in Illinois and save taxpayers millions of dollars.

"This is the way we are going to end violence in the streets and frankly end some of the overcrowding we have in our jails right now," Dart said.

Those on hand for this event say a new national poll shows law enforcement leaders are overwhelmingly in favor of the proposal.
